Did you know that before Indigenous art was ever put onto canvas the Indigenous people would smooth over the soil to draw sacred designs which belonged to a particular ceremony? Body paint was also applied which held meanings connected to sacred rituals. These designs were outlined with circles and encircled with dots. Uninitiated people never got to see these sacred designs since the soil would be smoothed over or painted bodies would be washed. These sacred designs were disguised so the real meanings would remain mysterious to settlers.

During this lesson of Full Circle Mentoring Program, the youth from St. Martha learned the teaching behind dot painting and practiced their own sacred designs.
